This course will offer a clear-eyed account of what current artificial intelligence (AI) can and cannot actually do, distinguishing between science fiction and the genuine benefits offered and risks posed by “intelligent” machines.
How will AI reshape the workplace, work itself, and our children’s and grandchildren’s prospects? Who is steering this juggernaut, and can democratic institutions begin to govern the new technology before it outruns them?
Jim will try to demystify the AI “black box” with discussions along these lines, “Here’s why this thing that feels like it understands you actually doesn’t, and here’s what that explains about its failures.”
And he’ll take up what may be the most fascinating and puzzling aspect of current AI research, the fact that even the people building these systems can’t fully explain their emergent capabilities.
