Description
What was so different about the Sixties? In the title of his landmark book, famed chronicler Todd Gitlin referred to the period as “Years of Hope, Days of Rage.” Was this a time of extraordinary vision and genuine transformation or of foolish dreams, empty promises, and even the beginning of the fraying of American culture?
While the first characterization will shape our conversation, we'll take care to examine both points of view and to ask, “Why does the political and cultural right so despise the Sixties phenomenon?” We will explore several progressive values that gained sharper focus in the 1960s and are essential to global citizenship in the 21st century.
In the third week of the series, we’ll explore some of how Donald Trump and his GOP seek to reverse the cultural evolutionary shift that emerged in the Sixties.
