Description
Before Ronald Reagan captured the Oval Office in 1980, America’s evangelical Christians tended to be Republican and traditionally conservative. They were generally not, however, obsessively anti-abortion, homophobic, white supremacist, or misogynistic. Their focus tended to be rather on the world to come than on the coming election.
That’s no longer the case for a large swath of American evangelicals, whose descent into the GOP’s  toxic right-wing culture wars has been underway for 40 years. Now increasingly faithful to extremist tropes and in thrall to an angry, unforgiving Republican Jesus, the evangelical church is virtually unrecognizable to many lifelong adherents.
We’ll examine the roots of the transformation, its prime movers, and the cost it has exacted from American Christians and from our democratic society. It’s a story about disinformation, radicalization, and a tragic loss of discernment.
