The Second Axial Age — Are Religion and Spirituality Really Evolving?
It’s a common trope that modern religion is an attempt to impose antiquated doctrines on an age no longer in need of them. Humans have evolved, we’re told; we have outgrown all that. But what if religious teaching and spiritual practice have also evolved? Learn about the First and Second Axial Ages!

Description
Historians of the great religions often refer to the First Axial Age (centered on the 6th century BCE). A religious and cultural “turning of the axis,” it was marked by the emergence of a new individual consciousness that made it possible for ancient humans to step forth from purely tribal existence. This series will explore the idea that human culture has entered a Second Axial Age, which is giving rise to a new global consciousness. Still acutely aware of our individual existence, we begin to recognize our roles as global citizens. Participants will encounter the two great periods of human spiritual evolution and hear Eastern and Western insights into the transformation that may now be underway.
Four Lectures:
• The First Axial Age: the Emergence of the Classical Religions
Discovering the roots of today’s major religions in the 6th century BCE
• Evolutionary Voices of the East
Second Axial wisdom from great teachers of the East
• Evolutionary Voices of the West
Western spiritual guides for the Second Axial Turning
• The Second Axial Age: Spiritually Empowered Global Engagement
The evolutionary transformation of religion and spirituality in our time
